The Valley of Astonishment
Director - Matīss Kaža
When you were just one or two years old, your mother sang you lullabies. You didn’t understand the meaning of the words, but you caught the syllables like brushstrokes of color. You caught them and learned the song. Many years have passed. You still see those strokes in your mind. And you see your mother.
Based on the play "The Valley of Astonishment" by Peter Brook, Marie-Hélène Estienne, and Alexander Luria, this performance explores the search for the divine within the extraordinary. It is a journey into the peculiar nature of the human brain and a very strange way of remembering—where words appear as colors and music can be tasted.
The performance is a tribute to the legendary director Peter Brook on his centenary—a man whose roots trace back to Latvia. It weaves together Sufi mythology and research into the remarkable phenomenon of synesthesia.
